The specialty of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care started with the clinical disciplines in the early 1980s. It was a unit under surgery till 1994 when Dr. Gabriel Boakye spearheaded its separation from the Department of Surgery. In 1996 it became a department with Dr. G. Boakye as the first head of department.
