The Department of Radiology at KNUST is a pivotal part of the School of Medical Sciences, dedicated to excellence in medical imaging and radiological sciences. Established to meet the growing needs for specialized radiological services in Ghana and beyond, the department equips students with advanced knowledge and practical skills in the field of radiology to help effectively use medical imaging in patient management. With state-of-the-art facilities and a team of seasoned radiologists with many years of experience and a keen desire to impart knowledge, the department fosters a learning environment that emphasizes diagnostic proficiency, patient care, and innovative medical practices.

3. Programmes Offered

The Department of Radiology provides essential radiology training as part of the following programmes:

 

MBChB Programme: Basic radiology training for medical students, integrating key imaging techniques and interpretations to enhance clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Physician Assistant BSc Programme: Tailored radiology courses that equip physician assistant students with the necessary radiological skills to support diverse healthcare settings.

 

4. Research Areas

The Department of Radiology engages in a wide range of research areas aimed at enhancing radiological practices and addressing health care challenges. Key research areas include:

Diagnostic Imaging: Innovations in MRI, CT, and ultrasound for early and accurate disease diagnosis in subspecialized areas such as Neuroradiology, Musculoskeletal Imaging, Head and Neck Imaging, Body Imaging, Chest imaging, Paediatric Imaging, Women’s Imaging.

Interventional Radiology: Development of minimally invasive image-guided therapeutic techniques.

Radiological Safety: Studies focused on minimizing radiation exposure to patients and healthcare workers.

Digital Radiology: Leveraging digital technologies and artificial intelligence to improve imaging efficiency and diagnostic accuracy.
