Embrace your creativity alongside your medical training”-SMS 1993 alumni

Prof. Samuel Kofi Tekyi Newton, acting dean of the School of Public Health, KNUST has shared an inspiring message on behalf of Dr. Emmanuel Sowah, president of the 1993 alumni group at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) School of Medical Sciences 50th pre-anniversary launch.

He emphasized the importance of embracing creativity alongside medical training as students.

Speaking at the event, he noted that, “talents are not distractions but valuable assets which should be nurtured."

He believes, “This helps in cultivating well-rounded doctors who are not only healers of the body but of the soul”.

The 1993 alumni presented a traditional umbrella, king’s stool, and ceremonial sword to SMS.

The items will be used in the swearing-in of future deans of the KNUST School of Medical Sciences.

Prof. Newton explained that “the umbrella symbolizes protection and guidance, the stool represents the weight of leadership and legacy, and the sword stands for justice, integrity, and solemn oath to serve honorably”.

The items serve as a reminder for deans to lead with humility, fairness and deep commitment to the well-being of the medical community.

He, however, expressed pride in how the school has shaped them into leaders and professionals and emphasized their honour in giving back to SMS.

Prof. Newton encouraged other alumni groups to emulate this gesture.
