KNUST School of Medicine and Dentistry organizes Mentorship Sessions for First and Final Year Medical Students

SMD Mentorship Session

 

The Mentorship Committee of the KNUST School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD) organised mentorship sessions for academic mentors and first and final-year medical students on the 26th and 28th of July 2023 at the Clinical Students Hostel at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hostel and the SMD Block A at Boadi respectively.

The initial meeting which took place at the Clinical hostel was organised for final-year medical students in the School of Medicine and Dentistry.

This meeting was aimed at guiding the students through preparations for their final examination in medical school. Each mentor met his/her mentees (in a small group, a total of 14 students per group). The focus of this meeting was for academic mentors to provide guidance to students (mentees) and encouragement for the students as they prepare for their final examinations. The academic mentors provided guidance on:

  • Effective ways of revising for final examinations (written and multiple-choice questions)
  • Preparing for clinical examinations in medical school
  • Psychology of handling post-examination results, especially in the unlikely event of failure, and where to get help if the need arises.
  • Preparing for life after medical school
  • Career Guidance

 

SMD Mentorship Session 2023

 

The second session of the mentorship meeting was organized by first-year medical students in the School of Medicine and Dentistry and took place at the SMD Block A Auditorium at Boadi. The meeting was aimed at introducing the students to the concept of mentor/ mentee partnerships and how to make the best of the mentoring process during their medical training. Each mentor met his/her mentees (in a small group of up to 12 students).

The focus of this meeting was for academic mentors to provide guidance to students (mentees), explaining to them how to get the best out of the mentoring process within the medical school. Mentors provided guidance on;

  • Effective ways of studying to improve learning outcomes
  • Preparing for examinations in the medical school.
  • Psychology of handling post-examination results, especially in the unlikely event of failure, and where to get help if the need arises.
  • Effective time management
  • Dealing with peer pressure

A total of 26 Academic Mentors and 340 students participated in the mentorship sessions. The members of the Mentorship Committee of the School of Medicine and Dentistry are Mr. Chris Amoah, Mr. James Nketsiah, Dr. Micheal Adinku, Dr. Micheal Amoah, Dr. Gordon Manu, Dr. Adwoa Pokua Boakye Yiadom, Dr. Amoh Antwi and its chaired by Dr. Sandra Kwarteng Owusu.
