The Dean of the School of Medical Sciences (SMS) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof. Akwasi Antwi-Kusi, met with class representatives to discuss the challenges students face at external teaching sites.
According to him, the teaching sites are intended to give students more access to patients, as the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) is currently congested.
“We purposely met to discuss the students' challenges, especially with the external teaching sites.
We realized that Komfo Anokye is now choked with a lot of students, so with our numbers, both medical and dental students, there was the need to have external teaching sites,” Prof. Kusi said.
During the meeting, students proposed having KNUST lecturers stationed at the external teaching sites.
They revealed that they benefit more when the lecturer is from the university.
The Dean, however, encouraged students to take ownership of their learning.
“This is apprenticeship. It’s not classroom teaching. Once you get to the hospital, don’t wait. Go to the wards, assist with procedures, help with patient care. Be involved,” he said.
