Dr. Isaac Okyere, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery at the School of Medical Sciences, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has been elected to the Council of the West African College of Surgeons.
The election took place at the 65th Annual Congress and Scientific Meeting held in Bamako, Mali, in February.
Dr. Okyere also serves as Vice-Chairman of the Ghana Chapter of the West African College of Surgeons.
He is the founding Head of the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Unit at KNUST and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Ghana.
Dr. Okyere played a key role in establishing the first cardiovascular and thoracic surgery clinic at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and performed the first open-heart surgery in Kumasi, the second largest city in Ghana.
Dr. Okyere has been involved in various roles at the West African College of Surgeons, including serving as a Council Member and as an examiner for the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons.
He is also a Fellow of both the West African College of Surgeons and the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons.
He has received training in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery in several countries, including the USA, UK, India, China, Belgium, and South Africa.
Dr. Okyere's research interests focus on cardiovascular and thoracic surgery in developing countries.
He has published and presented papers at numerous international and national conferences.
He is married to Dr. Perditer Okyere, a Senior Lecturer at KNUST and Consultant Physician Specialist at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), and they have three children.
