The School of Medical Sciences (SMS) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has hosted students from Afua Kobi Ampem Girls’ Senior High School for an educational visit aimed at exposing them to medical education and the diverse career opportunities available in the health sciences.

The visit, which took place on 4th August 2026, formed part of efforts to provide the students with firsthand insights into the academic environment, training opportunities and career pathways within the medical profession.

During the visit, the students embarked on guided tours of the School's facilities and participated in interactive sessions that introduced them to the academic programmes, research activities and practical healthcare training undertaken at the School of Medical Sciences.

Addressing the students, Professor Vivian Paintsil and Professor Sandra Kwarteng Owusu of the Department of Child Health encouraged them to remain focused on their academic goals and work diligently towards achieving their aspirations.

They admonished the students to take their studies seriously, strive for academic excellence and give their best in the pursuit of their dreams.

 

 

Sharing her personal journey, Professor Sandra Kwarteng Owusu inspired the students with her life experience, recounting how she came from a humble background and did not attend what may be considered a prestigious school. However, she explained that she had a dream and pursued it wholeheartedly, demonstrating that determination, hard work and a clear sense of purpose can help young people overcome limitations and achieve their ambitions.

The School Secretary, Mr. Christopher Addo, also took the students through the admission requirements for gaining entry into the KNUST School of Medical Sciences. He further provided an overview of the various programmes offered by the School and highlighted the opportunities available to students who aspire to build careers in medicine and related health disciplines.

The visit provided the students with an opportunity to engage directly with academics and administrators, ask questions about medical education and gain a better understanding of the commitment, discipline and preparation required to pursue a career in the health sciences.
