The Department of Child Health in the School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD), KNUST held a two-day retreat at Anita Hotel, Kumasi from 30th to 31st May 2022 to discuss academic-related matters and review schemes and events organized by the department.
The retreat was attended by the Teaching Staff, Dean and Vice Dean of SMD who are paediatricians and members of the department. The major highlights of the retreat include the Vetting of all exam questions for the end of the 2021/2022 Academic year, preparation for end-of-year exams, review of teaching contact hours by individual lecturers both full-time and part-time and the development of more Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCE) schemes which is a versatile multipurpose evaluative tool that can be utilized to assess health care professionals in a clinical setting.
There was a review of the ended Junior clerkship Programme and the preparations for the upcoming Senior clerkship Programme. The clerkship programme is set up to give students the experience in all parts of the hospital setting, including the operating room, emergency department, and various other departments that allow learning by viewing and doing.
Dr Augustine Afful, Paediatric Emergency Specialist made a research presentation titled Childhood poisoning which was a prerequisite for his appointment as a lecturer at the Department of Child Health. The purpose of the retreat is to foster a cohesive action for the growth of the department.
