Otumfuo backs KNUST SMS 50th anniversary, pledges full support

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has pledged his support for the 50th anniversary of the KNUST School of Medical Sciences, scheduled for October 3, 2025.

 

The KNUST Council Chairman, Management and Alumni of the School of Medical Sciences which was led by the Dean, Prof. Akwasi Antwi Kusi, visited the Manhyia Palace to formally invite the King and presented gifts to mark his 75th birthday.

The King welcomed the delegation and assured them of his involvement in the anniversary celebration.

 

“We are all going to celebrate the 50th anniversary. Anything we have to do to make it a success, I will be part of it,” he said.

 

He also recalled the early challenges of establishing a medical school in Kumasi and noted its impact on healthcare and education in the region.

 

The visit coincided with Awukudae, one of the sacred days on the Asante calendar.

 

Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, Prof. (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, introduced members of the delegation and officially invited Otumfuo to the celebration.

During the visit, the President of the Medical Students Association (MSA), Samuel Owusu Nsafoah, presented a citation to the Asantehene in recognition of his contributions to KNUST and the Ashanti Region.

 

The anniversary will bring together students, alumni, faculty, and stakeholders to reflect on 50 years of medical training and service.
