What does it take to rise to the very top of one of Ghana’s most demanding medical programmes?
For Dr. Emmanuella Nana Ahema Arhin, the answer lay in understanding herself and embracing her unique learning style.
Crowned Overall Best Graduating Student in MBChB, Medicine and Surgery, at the 59th Congregation of KNUST, Dr. Arhin attributes her remarkable success to discovering that she is a visual learner.
“I realized I am naturally a visual learner, so using educational videos before reading made everything much easier. It helped me understand concepts faster and retain them better,” she shares.
This simple yet powerful strategy became a turning point, guiding her to Distinction in all courses and recognition as the Best Student in Chemical Pathology, Anaesthesiology, Child Health, and Community Health.
But excelling academically was only part of her journey.
Dr. Arhin also balanced leadership and service, taking on roles as Assistant Hostels’ Overseer for PENSA-KATH, alumni coordinator for Juda Praise 2024, and an ambassador for her mother’s foundation supporting widows, orphans, and the needy.
“Having a good support system made a huge difference. My parents, lecturers, family, and friends stood by me during the tough times. Their encouragement kept me going,” she says.
While she once dreamed of becoming a cardiothoracic surgeon, her experiences in medical school have broadened her ambitions.
She now looks forward to exploring multiple specialties to discover where she can make the greatest impact.
As she steps into her house job, Dr. Arhin’s commitment remains unwavering,
“I aspire to be a good doctor—one who listens, cares, and always offers the very best to my patients.”
Beyond the wards, she envisions leveraging innovative medical outreach, using social media, community engagement, and digital health platforms to promote preventive medicine and empower communities with reliable health education.
Dr. Emmanuella Arhin’s story is a testament to how self-awareness, strategy, and dedication can turn challenges into triumphs and how one young doctor is already shaping the future of healthcare in Ghana.
Congratulations to Dr. Emmanuella Nana Ahema Arhin.
