The KNUST College of Health Sciences has congratulated Professor Yaw Ampem Amoako, an outstanding academic at the KNUST School of Medical Sciences and Principal Investigator of the Skin Neglected Tropical Diseases Research Group at the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR), on his appointment as the new Medical Director of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

The appointment, which took effect on 1st September 2026, marks a significant recognition of Professor Amoako’s distinguished career as a clinician, researcher and academic, as well as his extensive experience and commitment to advancing healthcare, research and medical education.

Professor Amoako’s research has made important contributions to the understanding and management of skin neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), including Buruli ulcer. Through his work, he has contributed to efforts aimed at advancing research and addressing the burden of neglected diseases in Ghana and beyond.

His appointment to lead one of Ghana’s foremost teaching hospitals also reflects his demonstrated leadership and dedication to strengthening healthcare delivery and medical training.

The College of Health Sciences is particularly proud to celebrate the appointment of one of its distinguished academics to this important leadership position. His new role further highlights the contributions of KNUST faculty and researchers to national development and the advancement of health and healthcare in Ghana.

The College is confident that his expertise, leadership and dedication will contribute to strengthening clinical services, research, training and innovation at KATH.
